Production on ATLANTIS began in June of 1990 and ran for several months, the first couple of which were spent building the various sets, dressing rooms, facilities, costumes, etc.
With everything filmed in or around the scrubland surrounding an old mental hospital, and a makeshift studio built within the walls of an old nurses training school on those same grounds, the film made good use of its budget, which was somewhere close to £10,000 (an estimate the director is at pains to recall correctly due to the length of production time, but believes was “possibly considerably lower”).
The actual time spent filming amounted to no more than a month (with a very brief couple of days devoted to location shooting) during that period and the remainder of the time was invested in the clean-up and clear-out work, whereby the building was demolished soon after as part of a redevelopment project.
The music score was being written during the period of shooting and after spending October and November editing and mixing the film, it was complete by Christmas of that same year...
